V&SH wins Tytan Award 2013 with HDD Intersect method

Recent

The unique HDD drilling Visser & Smit Hanab performed in the center of Rotterdam is rewarded with the Tytan Award 2013 in the category European trenchless technology project. This award is presented annually at the International Trenchless Engineering conference in Poland.

TYTAN award

Visser & Smit Hanab received the award for the successful execution of the 2 x 1,500 m long horizontal directional drilling under Katendrecht. This is the first HDD project in Europe  that was carried out with the Intersect method. In order to realize the drilling it was in fact necessary to drill from two sides towards each other with an angular displacement of 60 degrees. This was based upon a unique gyrocompas solution: a precision challenge for our drillers.

To realize the HDD drilling, the 450-ton rig was set on Brielselaan and the 100-ton rig on Wilhelmina Pier. Both drilling rigs edges towards each other in an angular displacement of 60 degrees. The drilling reached about 60 meters below sea level at the deepest point. At a distance of 1,000 meters from the 450-tons drill, the drillheads met at the "Meet in the Middle". The pilot bore of 1.500 meters was a fact and the 24 "steel pipe could be withdrawn.

The best solution for every client

Visser & Smit Hanab is happy and pleased winning this professional award. Director Drilling Technologies Wilko Koop: "This is an international recognition of the innovative capacity of our company. In all our projects, we strive to work with our customers to resolve the best solution in any situation. At the DNWW project this method resulted in this unique HDD solution. "

The HDD drillings are part of the ‘De Nieuwe Warmteweg (DNWW)' project; the design, construction and maintenance of a unique heat network in the Rotterdam region. Through a 26 kilometer long route residual heat released in industry is reinserted useful in the South of Rotterdam.
