'North Pipe Network' gets its start

Dutch energy company Eneco is installing a new district heating system, known by the project name 'Leiding over Noord' ('North Pipe Network'), that will run from Rozenburg, under the New Waterway navigation channel, past Vlaardingen and Schiedam, to Rotterdam. Work started in early September 2013, and by October 2014 the pipeline should be supplying heat, captured from the AVR energy-from-waste facility, to residences and businesses in Rotterdam.

 

In the future, Eneco also hopes to be able to supply heat from the new system to Vlaardingen and Schiedam. The system will provide enough energy to heat 95,000 homes, thereby greatly reducing CO2 emissions.

 

Leiding over Noord Eneco
The new district heating system totals 16.8 kilometres in length, broken down into 4 segments. Visser & Smit Hanab is responsible for segments 1 and 2. The job consists of installing twin Ø700/900 Steel PUR-PE pipes, each of which will be almost 10 kilometres in length, from the AVR facility to Kethelplein junction.

 

There are nine pipe jacking sections (microtunneling), varying from 47 to 111 metres in length, and three HDDs between 404 and 955 metres (Ø700/900 SiS), the longest of which runs under the New Waterway navigation channel.
